Pakistan: Authorities to impose increased security measures for international cricket matches in Lahore through April 17

Pakistani authorities to tighten security in Lahore through April 17 to facilitate international cricket matches with New Zealand.

Warning

Event

Authorities will implement heightened security measures in Lahore, Punjab Province, through April 17 to facilitate the international cricket matches between Pakistan's and New Zealand's national teams. Scheduled games will occur at the Gaddafi Stadium on April 14-15 and 17.

Officials will maintain an increased security presence in the city as a precaution, especially near hotels, airports, public parking spaces, and the Gaddafi Stadium. Security personnel will impose strict traffic restrictions, including detours and road closures, to facilitate local travel by both the cricket teams. Authorities may also intensify pedestrian and vehicle checks near the impacted areas. Security measures may prompt associated localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible through April 17. Isolated security incidents cannot be ruled out.

Context

International cricket teams have rarely visited Pakistan since Islamist militants opened fire on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009. In September 2019, over ten top Sri Lankan national players withdrew from a scheduled tournament citing security concerns, almost prompting the event's cancellation. Pakistani authorities have since assured the international community that extensive security is in place for visiting teams.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating in Lahore through April 17. Carry proper identification documents in the impacted areas; heed all official transport and security advisories.
