Authorities have closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 295 (I-295) in Yarmouth, Maine, April 18 while investigating the shooting of three motorists that occurred on the route earlier in the day. According to officials, the shooting on I-295 in the Yarmouth area was related to another incident in which four people were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds in a home in Bowdoin, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, early April 18. Police have confirmed that a suspect has been detained in connection with the shooting incidents and that there is no longer a threat to the public.

The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) reported as of around 15:35 that the southbound lanes of I-295 in Yarmouth "may remain closed for several more hours" due to the investigation. MaineDOT further advised motorists to avoid the affected area and alternatively use the Maine Turnpike.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the scenes of the shooting incidents over the coming hours.
