Cote d'Ivoire: Student organization to embark on indefinite nationwide strike from May 2

Students are to embark on indefinite strike in Cote d'Ivoire from May 2. Associated protests are likely.

Informational

Event

The Student and Pupil's Federation of Cote d'Ivoire (FESCI) has announced it is embarking on an indefinite nationwide strike from May 2 following the collapse of negotiations with the Ministry of Education (MESRS). Students have reportedly issued a memorandum of demands which include the lowering of tuition fees, the delivery of university degrees, and an increase in the number of study opportunities. This strike follows a previous protest in August 2022 over the same demands.

Disruptions to universities and educational facilities are likely nationwide for the duration of the strike. Associated protests and pickets are likely near universities. Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of any such actions that may materialize. The potential for clashes with security forces will be particularly elevated should protesters obstruct road traffic.

Advice

Plan for disruptions to educational and university facilities. Avoid any protests that materialize. Heed instruction of authorities.
