Israel, PT: Heightened tensions likely through mid-May amid exchange of fire between Israel and Palestinian militants /update 3

Heightened tensions likely amid rocket attacks in Israel and PT through mid-May. Disruptions to transport and business likely.

Warning

Event

Heightened tensions are likely through at least mid-May amid exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Gaza-based Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) militant group. The latest violence started as the PIJ fired several rockets toward communities in Israel's Southern and Central districts on May 10 following the IDF's airstrikes throughout the Gaza Strip May 9-10.

On May 10, rocket sirens sounded in several areas, including Ashkelon, Sderot, and as far as Tel Aviv. The IDF has intercepted most of the projectiles. One rocket reportedly landed near a residential area in Sderot, though no casualties have been reported. Late May 11, a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip struck a residential building in Rehovot, 20 km (12 miles) south of Tel Aviv, killing one person and wounding at least four others. The rocket also caused significant material damage. On May 12, rocket sirens sounded in the Jerusalem area and in the West Bank. Reports indicate that most rockets were intercepted by the IDF, but one reportedly landed near the settlement of Bat Ayin in the West Bank.

Israeli forces will almost continue to launch strikes on suspected militant targets in the Gaza Strip. Heightened security measures are likely throughout Israel, particularly in southern and central districts, over the coming hours and days. Rocket sirens will likely continue to be activated as Gaza-based militants fire additional rockets at communities in Israel over the coming days; precautionary measures, such as evacuations, are possible in affected areas.

Context

On May 9, the IDF launched Operation Shield and Arrow to target the PIJ leadership in the Gaza Strip. Three senior PIJ leaders were killed in the airstrikes. Israeli attacks have also killed over a dozen civilians. The operation came a few days after the PIJ launched nearly 100 rockets into Israel. The IDF has continued to conduct airstrikes against multiple bases, including a naval base, to degrade the PIJ's capabilities. Hostilities will likely persist over the coming days unless Egypt and other countries broker a ceasefire.

Advice

Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement.

Remain vigilant in all areas of Israel and the Palestinian Territories over the coming days due to the high potential for violence. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. Confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations in the vicinity of any demonstrations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Monitor local media and liaise with trusted contacts for updates on protest activity as organizers may not announce plans in advance.
