Israel, PT: Israel Defense Forces likely to increase security following cross-border rocket fire from Gaza Strip May 2

Israel likely to increase security following cross-border rocket fire from Gaza Strip May 2. Protests, strike across PT likely.

Warning

Event

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will likely increase security measures after rockets fired from the Gaza Strip landed near Isreal's southern border May 2. While the Iron Dome was not activated and no casualties were reported, further similar cross-border violence is possible. The attack occurred following the death of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) leader in Israeli custody early May 2 after an 86-day hunger strike. The PIJ has threatened to retaliate and called for a general strike in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Tensions will likely remain high in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip over the coming days. The IDF will likely maintain heightened security measures, including checkpoints and movement restrictions, and increase security operations in the Palestinian Territories. Palestinian demonstrations and strikes are also almost certain over the coming hours, particularly in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Associated clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces are likely. Additional cross-border exchanges of fire between the IDF and Gaza-based militants are possible.

Advice

Monitor local media and abide by security forces' directives. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported, or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Exercise caution while operating in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. Avoid all demonstrations, and plan for localized transport disruptions. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions before traveling.
