Opposition parties to gather at Carnival Area in Male, Maldives, from 20:30 June 2. Tight security likely; disruptions, clashes possible.

Informational

Event

A coalition of opposition parties plans to hold a rally at the Carnival area in Male from 20:30 on June 2. Organizers are demanding the government appeal against an International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea’s (ITLOS) ruling that awarded Maldives and Mauritius split control over a disputed exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Several dozen to a few hundred people will probably join the demonstration.

Security personnel will likely monitor the event and may disperse the gathering if it is especially disruptive. Localized transport disruptions are possible near the venue, especially if supporters hold marches or motorcades toward the site. The event is likely to be peaceful, but clashes between police and participants cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the rally as a precaution. Plan for possible travel delays in the affected area late June 2. If clashes break out nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a secure, non-government building. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
