Mauritania: Continuing internet disruptions possible over coming days after officials cut mobile internet access May 31 following major protest activity /update 1
Continuing internet service disruptions possible in Mauritania over coming days after mobile internet access cut May 31 following protests.
Event
Internet service disruptions may continue in Mauritania over the coming days after authorities suspended mobile internet access across the country on May 31 in apparent connection with widespread protests over the controversial death of a young man. Despite the disruptions, fixed internet lines reportedly remained connected and no significant business disruptions were reported May 31. The internet restrictions come after activists staged protests in several cities and towns, including Nouakchott, Kaedi, Bababi, Sebkha, Zouerat, and Bogue, to demand justice for Omar Diop, who recently died in a hospital shortly after being arrested for allegedly participating in a brawl. Hundreds of activists may participate in additional demonstrations through at least early June, including ahead of and immediately following the release of the results of the autopsy.
Demonstrators have burned tires, vandalized property, and clashed with security forces amid the protests. Activists have notably alleged that security forces fired live ammunition at protesters in Bogue on May 30, killing at least one person and wounding an unspecified number of others.
Officials may loosen or tighten internet service restrictions on short notice. Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence to the sites of any additional demonstrations that materialize, as well as around the Sebkha police station, where Diop was taken into police custody. Localized disruptions to transport and business are possible in areas subject to protest activity and increased security. Further clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for violence. Refrain from unnecessary travel in areas where unrest is occurring. If travel is necessary in areas where protest activity is occurring, plan for transport disruptions and allow for additional time to reach nearby destinations. If clashes break out, leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Monitor local media for updated information. Heed all official security and traffic advisories.
