Unidentified assailants opened fire at an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) humanitarian convoy traveling in Hsi Hseng Township, Taunggyi District, Shan State, May 8. The incident reportedly occurred while the convoy was traveling to Taunggyi City. There were no casualties due to the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

Hsi Hseng Township is approximately 65 km (40 miles) south-southeast of Taunggyi City.

Context

The convoy, which included Indonesian and Singaporean embassy staff, as well as Myanmar military officials and other ASEAN representatives, were reportedly en route to a meeting with Pa-O National Liberation Army (PNLA), an ethnic armed organization based in the area. The pro-democracy and main opposition National Unity Government (NUG), as well as PNLA and the junta-aligned Pa-O National Organization (PNO), have denied any involvement in the attack. The incident highlights the threat posed by armed groups across Myanmar, including in cities and populated areas. Anti-regime groups typically target military personnel or infrastructure, as well as people and organizations perceived to be connected to the armed forces.
