Europe: Flight disruptions possible across region through June 23 amid airspace closure due to military exercise

German officials to restrict airspace through June 23 due to military exercise; European flight disruptions possible. Reconfirm flights.

Warning

Event

Due to German airspace restrictions, commercial flight cancellations and delays are possible across Europe until at least June 23. An estimated 25 countries will participate in a joint NATO air deployment simulation dubbed Air Defender 23. Some flight disruptions are possible in European airspaces, including Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. Reports indicate that at least 800 flights will be re-routed daily, and several others will have extended flight paths, increasing flight lengths and possibly impacting terminal operations. However, officials assert that they will try and minimize the exercise's impact on commercial travel.

Officials may cancel and delay flights on short notice due to airspace restrictions' impact.

Advice

Reconfirm flights if you are scheduled to travel through Europe until at least late June. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
