India: Clashes reported amid protest in Kolhapur, Maharashtra State the afternoon of June 7

Activists of Hindu organizations are protesting at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in Kolhapur, Maharashtra State, the afternoon of June 7 over social media posts deemed disrespectful to a national icon. Participants have also called for a strike, June 7; however as of writing it is unclear if the call is being adhered to. The protests began June 6 and clashes between protesters and police, as well as between participants and counterprotesters, were reported at multiple locations, including at Dasara Chowk and in the Laxmipuri area.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture near the protest site. Localized transport disruptions are likely due to increased security measures. Additional clashes cannot be ruled out.
