Warning

Event

Emergency crews are continuing to respond to a wildfire burning near Semey in the Abai Region as of June 13. The fire broke out in the Batpayev forest area June 8 and has since spread to other forests in the region. Authorities have reported that the fire has grown to around 60,000 hectares (148,263 acres) as of June 13. More than 1,800 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Officials have reported that 14 forestry workers have lost their lives during response operations to control the fire. More than 300 people have been evacuated from the village of Borodulikha and parts of Semey. The governor of Semey has declared a state of emergency in the city due to the wildfire threat. Dry and windy conditions are forecast in the region through at least June 20; further fire growth is possible in the coming hours and days.

Business and transport disruptions may persist in the affected area over the coming hours. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days. Authorities could close routes within the fire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the need for response operations. Traffic flows could also be disrupted during re-entry periods after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region, as well as possibly disrupting operations at nearby airfields, including Semey Airport (PLX).

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged power outages.
