As of June 21, security operation Wuambushu continues across Mayotte. Localized disruptions, protests possible.

Informational

Event

As of June 21, the security operation Wuambushu that began in late April continues across Mayotte. Its reported purpose is to evict undocumented, predominantly Comorian migrants from shantytowns, demolish impermanent structures within such areas, and deport those evicted to Comoros' island of Anjouan. Hundreds security force personnel are participating in the operation. Various civil society groups have criticized the operation, citing human rights violations.

Heightened security measures and consequent transport disruptions may impact areas across Mayotte over the coming weeks. Protests denouncing the operation are possible in Mayotte over the coming weeks, particularly in areas subject to police activity and outside government buildings, such as the Prefecture of Mayotte building in Mamoudzou. Activists may also stage demonstrations in support of the operation. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces, as well as between security forces and those standing to be evicted and deported, cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Plan for increased security and related disruptions across Mayotte, notably near shantytowns, over the coming weeks. Avoid shantytowns and any demonstrations that materialize; if crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately. Heed authorities' instructions.
