Communal fighting ongoing in Wapenamanda District, Enga Province, Papua New Guinea, June 26. Flight disruptions continue.

Warning

Event

Fighting between the Mupapalu and Nenei clans of the Itokon tribe continues in Wapenamanda District, Enga Province, June 26. The fighting, which started June 11 over a land dispute, has killed at least 10 people and injured several others. Although authorities have managed to control the clashes and are seeking a resolution through negotiations, officials have designated Wapenamanda District as a fighting zone.

PNG Air (CG) continues to suspend all flights to Wapenamanda Airport (WBM). CG officials previously stated that the flight suspension will remain in place indefinitely until the situation is deemed safe. Increased demand for flights to nearby airstrips or ground transport is possible.

Security personnel will likely increase patrols in the area and erect roadblocks in areas where clashes occur; while authorities have deployed additional security personnel to the area, law enforcement agencies remain generally under-resourced and are unable to respond effectively. Members of both communities could also clash with security forces. Arson attacks, as well as vandalism and looting, remain possible over the coming weeks.

Wapenamanda is approximately 85 km (52 miles) southeast of Porgera.

Advice

Consider avoiding nonessential travel to the impacted area until tensions subside. Avoid concentrations of fighters and security personnel due to potential violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter, or remain inside away from windows if indoors. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local media for updates. Contact airlines to reconfirm flight reservations to and from WBM; book alternative travel arrangements if required. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
