Informational

Event

The Philippines will celebrate its 125th Independence Day, June 12. Official events will likely occur nationwide at government buildings and other key sites, including the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite Province, the historical site of the proclamation of independence. In Metro Manila, authorities will close parts of Roxas Boulevard, as well as Katigbak Parkway, South, and Independence roads to facilitate related events and parades. Dozens to hundreds of people will probably participate in each event, especially in urban centers like Metro Manila.

Activists have called for demonstrations in conjunction with Independence Day. In Metro Manila, members of the New Patriotic Alliance (BAYAN) plan to gather at the Chinese Consulate from 09:00 before ending their protest at the US Embassy 11:00 June 12. The action is to denounce Beijing's assertiveness in the South China Sea and the continued US military presence in the Philippines. Other possible rally sites in Metro Manila include Bonifacio Shrine and Mendiola. Supporters and opponents of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. may also stage rallies. Dozens to hundreds of protesters will probably take part in each gathering. While rallies will likely remain peaceful, minor clashes cannot be ruled out.

Authorities will likely heighten security at any program and demonstration sites June 12 as a precaution. Officials may issue terror warnings due to threats posed by militant groups, including Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), and New People's Army (NPA) in Mindanao. Localized transport and business disruptions are probable nearby event and rally locations. Increased petty crime is possible in crowded areas nationwide.

Advice

Plan for increased security around Independence Day program sites or any rally locations. Avoid any demonstrations due to possible clashes. Seek updated information on protests from trusted local contacts, as activists may not announce rally sites in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations near likely program and protest venues. Closely guard bags and other valuables in crowded locations. Heed all official advisories and remain cooperative if stopped by authorities for security checks.
