South Korea: Labor union calls for general strike nationwide July 3-15

Labor union calls for general strike across South Korea July 3-15. Protests possible in some areas. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Event

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has called for a nationwide general strike July 3-15 to demand President Yoon Seok-yeol's resignation. Organizers claim that between 400,000 to 500,000 workers will participate in the action; actual participation will probably be lower. The Korean Metal Workers' Union is a KCTU member and will join the strike July 12, potentially impacting operations at car manufacturers and other heavy industrial plants nationwide. Although South Korean law requires workers to maintain essential public services, government service and public transport disruptions are possible.

Related protests are likely during the labor action. KCTU has called for candlelight vigils nationwide July 4, 7, 11, and 14. Rallies are likely in Seoul and other major cities nationwide; gatherings may also occur near major industrial zones in Daegu, Ulsan, and Busan. In Seoul, demonstrations may occur at the National Assembly, Seoul Plaza, or Gwanghwamun Square.

Increased security is likely near government buildings and other potential rally sites. Demonstrations will probably remain peaceful, but minor clashes between police and workers are possible. Localized transport disruptions could occur near any protest venue.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for clashes. As organizers may not announce protest sites in advance, use caution near popular gathering sites and monitor local media for updates. Allow additional traveling time near rally sites, especially in central Seoul. Plan for potential business disruptions July 3-15; confirm appointments and time-sensitive shipments.
