Severe weather forecast across Vanuatu through at least June 6. Flooding, transport, business, utility disruptions possible.

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and possible flash flooding and landslides are forecast across most of Vanuatu through at least June 6. As of June 5, the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department have issued severe weather warnings for heavy rainfall and strong winds over the country. Heavy rainfall is forecast over Penama, Sanma, and Torba provinces June 5-6 and strong inland winds of up to 40 kph (25 miles) are likely across the exposed parts of Vanuatu islands. Marine wind warnings are in place for all Vanuatu coastal waters June 5-6; strong winds with rough seas are likely. Authorities advise residents to be vigilant for potential flash and riverine flooding in low-lying areas and along riverbanks, remain indoors during thunderstorms, and take extra precautions from possible flying debris. Officials could update and extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed or lack of stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services may occur where significant flooding, strong winds, or landslides impact utility networks.
Transport
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports across Vanuatu. Authorities may temporarily suspend port operations or close beach fronts if strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions.
Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities and some employees' inability to reach work sites.
