Australia: Pro-refugee activists plan to demonstrate in multiple cities July 19-23
Pro-refugee activists to stage rallies in multiple cities across Australia July 19-23. Localized transport disruptions possible.
Event
Pro-refugee activists plan to stage rallies across Australia July 19-23 to mark the 10-year anniversary of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's 2013 announcement to ban asylum seekers arriving by boat from settling in Australia. Organizers have announced rallies at the following locations and times:
July 19: Cairns Esplanade Western Event Lawn, from 17:30
July 22: Perth Cultural Centre from 13:00, and State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, from 14:00
July 23: Sydney Town Hall from 13:00; King George Square in Brisbane from 14:00, and the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and London Circuit in Canberra, from 13:00
Events in major cities are likely to draw a few hundred participants. Lower attendance of up to a few dozen people is likely in Canberra and Cairns. The protests are likely to pass off peacefully.
Authorities will likely monitor protests and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Localized transport disruptions are possible during rallies, especially if demonstrators occupy or march on nearby roads. Minor isolated skirmishes between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Exercise caution around rally sites as a precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately for a secure, non-government building. Allow additional travel time to reach destinations near rallies. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
