Informational

Event

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party plans to stage rallies in major urban centers July 28, in district towns July 30, and at the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka from 14:00 Aug. 1. The demonstrations are to demand the formation of a caretaker government, the release of political prisoners, including the party's leader Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, as well as the reduction of the prices of essential items. Although organizers have yet to reveal specific location and timing details, potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, sports grounds, and major thoroughfares. The highest participation is likely in urban centers like Dhaka, where thousands of people could join each demonstration. Other rallies are likely to draw up to a few hundred participants.

Authorities will likely monitor the rallies and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Clashes between police and activists and among members of opposing political groups are possible. Demonstrators may march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
