Italy: Labor unions plan aviation sector strikes on July 15

Labor unions plan aviation sector strikes nationwide in Italy on July 15. Disruptions likely. Confirm flight reservations.

Warning

Event

Multiple labor unions representing workers in Italy's air transport sector plan to strike on July 15 over pay and working conditions. The industrial action will affect airline ground handling and check-in staff, air traffic controllers (ATC), and aircrew for certain airlines.

  • Airport ground staff: Ground staff, baggage handlers, and check-in staff will strike nationwide from 10:00-18:00.

  • ATC: Staff represented by the ENAV labor union will strike for 24 hours.

  • Aircrew: Pilots of Malta Air (KM), which also operates Ryanair (FR) flights, and aircrew of Vueling (VY) will strike on July 15.

There is likely to be a significant cumulative effect nationwide. Unless completely averted, the walkout will probably cause significant flight disruptions on the scheduled date. Italian law requires workers to maintain a minimum level of service during labor strikes in critical transport and infrastructure sectors. Protests are possible by striking workers.

Advice

Monitor trusted local sources for updates on the status of the new strike date. Reconfirm all travel arrangements if booked to within or via Italy July 15. Arrive at the airport well ahead of schedule. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
