Kenya: Opposition party coalition plan to protest nationwide July 12

Kenyan opposition party coalition to stage nationwide protests July 12. Transport and business disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The opposition Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition plans to stage a rally at Nairobi's Kamukunji Ground and nationwide protests on July 12. The protests are a continuation of previous demonstrations on June 27 and July 7 to denounce the passage of the Finance Bill 2023 by the Members of the National Assembly and the government's failure to lower the cost of living, among other concessions. The Bill imposes new taxes and raises existing levies on products and services, including a 1.5 percent mandatory housing fund contribution.

Although organizers did not immediately announce details regarding demonstrations outside Nairobi, gatherings will most likely occur near government buildings, stadiums, prominent squares in city centers, and along major thoroughfares. Security personnel will likely be deployed in urban centers across the country and will probably attempt to break up any gatherings that materialize; the potential for clashes between security forces and protesters is elevated given that the protests are banned. Counter-protests are also likely, and clashes between groups of rival activists cannot be ruled out. Transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to protest activity.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Allow extra time to reach destinations near protest sites. Do not attempt to drive through roadblocks. If violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed instructions of authorities.
