Kenya, Uganda: Trucker strike disrupting freight operations along Northern Transport Corridor as of July 14.
Trucker strike in Kenya disrupting freight transport between Mombasa port and Malaba border crossing with Uganda as of July 14.
Event
Members of the Kenya Long Distance Truck Drivers Union (KLDTDU) operating along the "northern corridor" between Malaba border crossing with Uganda and the port of Mombasa have begun a strike action as of July 14. The strike reportedly started July 12 after Kenyan authorities suspended commercial and public service vehicle testing until Sept. 1. Reports suggest the strike has stranded over 5,000 trucks at the border. It is unclear when the action will end.
Freight transport and travel delays are likely during the strike. Heightened security measures are probable, especially near the border with Uganda. Backlogs of cargo trucks near the key port of Mombasa are possible. Freight delays may result in temporary goods shortages in Kenya and Uganda and consequent protests among traders in the border region. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces are possible.
Advice
Plan for freight and transport delays in Uganda and Kenya. Remain vigilant of striking truck drivers when traveling along the Malaba-Nairobi-Mombasa axis, especially along the A109/A104. Reconfirm the status at the Uganda-Kenya border before scheduling cargo shipments or other travel across it. Maintain heightened levels of vigilance in border areas. Avoid concentrations of security personnel and any protest activity.
