Papua New Guinea: Curfews, flight disruptions affecting Enga Province, as of July 27 due to communal fighting /update 2
Tribal clashes prompting curfew across Enga Province, Papua New Guinea, through Oct. 26. Flights to Wapenamanda District suspended.
Event
Authorities are imposing a 21:00-06:00 daily curfew in all six districts of Enga Province through at least Oct. 26 to control ongoing tribal clashes. Officials have also announced enhanced security measures, including travel restrictions to and from the province, and search operations. Additionally, PNG Air (CG) has indefinitely suspended all flights to Wapenamanda Airport (WBM) effective 00:01 July 25. Demand for flights to nearby airstrips or ground transport may increase. Disruptions to government offices, public services, and educational institutions are also possible if significant violence occurs.
Security personnel will likely increase patrols and erect roadblocks in areas where clashes occur. While authorities have deployed additional security personnel to the area, law enforcement agencies remain generally under-resourced and are unable to respond effectively. Members of rival communities could clash with security forces. Arson attacks, as well as vandalism and looting, remain possible over the coming weeks.
Advice
Consider avoiding nonessential travel to the impacted area until tensions subside. Avoid concentrations of fighters and security personnel due to potential violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter, or remain inside away from windows if indoors. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local media for updates. Contact airlines to reconfirm flight reservations to and from WBM; book alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed.
