Sri Lanka: Authorities to increase security in parts of Colombo through at least July 29 following recent protest activity and clashes

Officials to increase security in parts of Colombo, Sri Lanka, through at least July 29 after recent protest activity and clashes.

Warning

Event

Authorities are increasing security measures in parts of the Colombo District through at least July 29 amid recent protest activity and clashes occurring since July 28. On July 28, several activists, including those affiliated with the Frontline Socialist Party, held protest marches before police resorted to tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds in the Wanathamulla area of Borella; it remained immediately unclear what the demonstrators are demanding. Officials have consequently issued a public gathering restriction through 10:00 July 29 around Colombo's Maradana Police Station, Lipton Roundabout, and other surrounding areas.

Additional related gatherings are possible despite the increased security measures in effect. Potential gathering sites include the De Soysa/Liberty Circus intersections, Galle Face Green, and Fort Railway Station, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Officials are likely to maintain a heightened security posture in the affected areas. Security personnel may implement enhanced measures, including vehicular checks and temporary public movement restrictions. Further clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport disruptions are likely.

Advice

Exercise increased caution if operating in or near Colombo District. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near the impacted area. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
