El Salvador: Security forces conducting operation in Cabanas as of Aug. 2

The government of El Salvador has deployed at least 8,000 security units throughout the Department of Cabanas as of Aug. 2. The purpose of the action is to forcibly remove members of organized criminal organizations that allegedly remain in the region. Authorities have indicated that they do not intend to end the operation until all criminal elements are removed. Security forces have additionally set up checkpoints on roads entering and exiting Cabanas.

Very tight security is likely throughout Cabanas over the coming days. Armed clashes could occur if Salvadoran troops come in contact with criminal elements.
