Georgia: Disruptive flooding likely to continuing in Tbilisi into at least Aug. 30
Flooding-related disruptions likely to continue in Tbilisi, Georgia, through at least Aug. 30. Power outages possible.
Event
Flooding-related disruptions will likely continue in Tbilisi through at least Aug. 30 amid a weather system bringing heavy rains and high winds to the Georgian capital. Strong winds have also downed trees and power lines, leading to localized electricity outages. While the Gldani district is the worst-impacted part of the city, authorities are advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel throughout Tbilisi until further notice as of late Aug. 29. Torrential rains have inundated underground passages and submerged cars in some locations. Crews from various municipal agencies have been deployed in response to the situation.
Heavy rains are forecast to continue into at least the mid-morning of Aug. 30 and will likely exacerbate existing flooding.
Advice
Avoid unnecessary travel until authorities give the all-clear. Monitor information from Tbilisi authorities for updates. After the weather system clears, confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Allow extra time for travel in the affected area and plan alternative routes if necessary. Do not drive on flooded roads.
