A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred near the far southwestern coast of Java at around 11:28 Aug. 17. The epicenter was about 121 km (75 miles) of Labuan. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 58 km (36 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout Banten, Jakarta, western West Java, and southern Lampung provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake.
