Armed clashes violate ceasefire in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon, Lebanon, late Aug. 2; further violence possible over coming days.

Warning

Event

Further violence is possible in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in Sidon District over the coming days after a renewal of armed clashes recorded in the area late Aug. 2 violated a recent ceasefire agreement. The fighting between Jund al-Sham militants and Fatah, which reportedly involved machine guns and rockets, left at least one person dead and two others wounded. Armed clashes initially broke out in the refugee camp July 29 and escalated July 30 following the killing of a local Fatah commander in a related militant ambush.

Heightened security measures, including road closures and personnel and vehicle checks, and disruptions to transport and business are likely in the area over the short term.

Advice

Avoid the area until the situation stabilizes. If operating in the area, exercise increased vigilance and depart the vicinity at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
