Mozambique: Medical workers extend strike nationwide through Sept. 9 /update 3
Health unions in Mozambique extend nationwide strike through Sept. 9. Related protests possible.
Event
Unions representing doctors and other health personnel announced Aug. 20 plans to extend an ongoing strike that initially began July 10, through Sept. 9. While the work stoppage has reportedly caused shortages and delays to medical services in public hospitals since the strike began, union officials announced that a minimum level of service would be guaranteed.
The extension could result in a wider observance of the strike and cause further service delays in medical and health services. Protests could also materialize near hospitals and clinics. Striking participants protested in Maputo on Aug. 5. Security personnel will probably monitor sizeable gatherings if demonstrations are held; violence is unlikely.
Context
The ongoing strike follows a series of similar actions that began in November 2022, when negotiations with the government collapsed. The government had then successfully lobbied the unions to cancel the strike over the health risks posed by the closing of medical facilities and had signed an agreement with medical professionals in February 2023. Their demands include higher wages and an end to the shortage of drugs and surgical materials.
Advice
Confirm medical appointments as a precaution. Plan for service delays; if possible, contact facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary. Avoid any protests as a standard precaution. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
