Mozambique: Medical workers suspend nationwide strike as of Aug. 28 /update 4

Health unions in Mozambique suspend nationwide strike as of Aug. 28 amid ongoing negotiations with authorities. Delays remain possible.

Informational

Event

As of Aug. 28, the Association of United Health Professionals of Mozambique (APSUSM) and the Medical Association of Mozambique (AMM) have decided to suspend ongoing strike action to negotiate with the government. The AMM has reportedly suspended protest action through Oct. 2 at least and the APSUSM until Nov. 5. While the work stoppage reportedly caused shortages and delays to medical services in public hospitals since the strike began, union officials reportedly worked to ensure a minimum level of service.

Delays in medical and health services remain possible in the coming days as hospitals work through the backlog of appointments. The strike and protests could resume at short notice should negotiations collapse. Protest locations include hospitals and clinics; security personnel will likely monitor sizeable gatherings if demonstrations are held; violence is unlikely.

Context

This recent strike followed a series of similar actions that began in November 2022, when negotiations with the government collapsed. The government had then successfully lobbied the unions to cancel the strike over the health risks posed by the closing of medical facilities and had signed an agreement with medical professionals in February 2023. Their demands include higher wages and an end to the shortage of drugs and surgical materials.

Advice

Confirm medical appointments as a precaution. Plan for service delays; if possible, contact facilities in advance for information about wait times, which could vary. Avoid any protests as a standard precaution. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
