North Korea: Pyongyang launches apparent space rocket southward over Okinawa Prefecture toward Pacific Ocean early Aug. 24

North Korea launches apparent space rocket over Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, early Aug. 24; no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Informational

Event

Japanese officials have lifted an emergency warning for individuals in Okinawa Prefecture that was prompted by North Korea's firing of a long-range projectile southward from the Tongchang-ri area at around 03:51 Aug. 24. The warning, which instructed individuals in Okinawa Prefecture to seek shelter indoors or underground, lasted for about 20 minutes and was rescinded after the projectile, an apparent space rocket, passed over the prefecture toward the Pacific Ocean. There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties in connection with the incident. Japanese authorities have instructed individuals to stay away from any suspicious objects that could be rocket debris and to contact police or fire department personnel if such debris is encountered.

Context

The Aug. 24 incident came after North Korean authorities notified Japanese officials that they would launch a satellite at some point between Aug. 24 and Aug. 31. The launch marked Pyongyang's second recent attempt to put a military reconnaissance satellite into orbit; North Korean state media confirmed after the launch that the attempt had failed, and asserted that the country would again attempt to place a satellite into orbit in October. The country's first attempt in May also failed, with the rocket falling into the sea.

Despite attempts at jumpstarting diplomacy, the geopolitical dynamics on the Korean Peninsula remain largely unaltered, as North Korea has previously stated that it will only give up its nuclear weapons in exchange for concrete moves to reduce perceived US threats against it. North Korean leaders have previously warned of stronger actions in response to US sanctions. However, both sides will likely avoid any actions that could escalate into a full-scale conflict.
