Pakistan: Protests after sentencing of Imran Khan, Aug. 5 /update 1

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf calls for nationwide protests in Pakistan after sentencing of Imran Khan, Aug. 5.

Warning

Event

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has called for nationwide peaceful protests in response to the sentencing and arrest of its leader, Imran Khan, earlier on Aug. 5. Several protests have already been reported. No major security incidents have been reported as yet. Khan received a three-year sentence in a corruption-related case. He was taken into custody at his residence at Zaman Park in Lahore.

Heightened security is likely near all demonstration sites. Protests could occur near government buildings, press clubs, courthouses, city centers, and along major roads in cities nationwide. The threat of violence between demonstrators and police is elevated. Any protests will also likely result in localized ground travel delays. Officials could also suspend telecommunications, including internet service, in protest areas.

Advice

Avoid all protests and concentrations of security personnel. Monitor developments closely with trusted contacts.
