Heightened security and protests are likely in downtown Washington, DC, Aug. 3, due to former President Donald J. Trump's court appearance in connection with an indictment for allegedly conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections. Trump has denied the allegations.

Police have set up barriers around the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse, located along Constitution Avenue NW, where Trump will make his court appearance at around 16:00. Authorities are likely to close nearby roads during the afternoon of Aug. 3. Protests in support of and against the former president are likely in the area.

Transport and business disruptions are possible due to the increased police presence and the likely demonstrations in the area. Low-level clashes between protesters and police, or between opposing demonstrators are possible.

This will be Trump's third court appearance in 2023, over different cases. The previous two, in Miami, Florida, and New York, New York, also led to security operations that disrupted traffic and business operations in the areas around the courts. The appearances ended peacefully and without major incidents.
