The Union of Mototaxi Drivers of Angola (UMA) has announced a protest in Luanda on Sept. 16. Protestors will gather near the Santa Ana cemetery from 10:00, and then proceed to the Luanda Provincial Government. The action is in response to Luanda's Provincial Government banning the circulation of motorcycle taxis on some of the city's main avenues as a means of curbing accidents. Fellow trade union, the Association of Motorcycle Drivers and Transporters of Angola (AMOTRANG), has also called for protests; however, it is unclear whether they will join the Sept. 16 demonstration.
Heightened security is likely near protest sites. The police response will likely include road closures, resulting in ground travel and business operation disruptions. Violence between police and protesters is possible.
