Canada, India: Indian authorities suspend visa applications for Canadian nationals effective Sept. 21

India suspends issuance of visas to Canadians as of Sept. 21 amid diplomatic tensions. Confirm travel arrangements.

Warning

Event

Indian authorities confirmed the indefinite suspension of visa application services for Canadian nationals effective Sept. 21. Officials noted that security threats to Indian diplomats are temporarily disrupting visa-related operations in its Canadian missions. In addition, Canadians in all locations cannot apply for fresh Indian visas until further notice. India has not specified when services will resume. Indian authorities also confirmed the suspension will affect all visa categories, including electronic visa applications. Other consular services will continue, and previously issued visas remain valid.

The move comes amid heightened bilateral diplomatic tensions after a recent parliamentary statement by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about “credible allegations” of Indian government involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader who was also a Canadian national. India has strongly refuted the claim; Trudeau has said that his government will conduct a probe into the accusations. Both countries have expelled senior diplomats in a tit-for-tat move and advised their respective citizens to exercise heightened caution during travel to the other nation.

Travel disruptions are likely, especially if reciprocatory measures are taken by Canada. Additional disruptions to consular services remain possible.

Advice

Confirm all travel arrangements before departure if traveling between India and Canada. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission.
