Warning

Event

Authorities have announced increased security measures, including large-scale patrols, in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province, after reports of arson, vandalism, and violence at a protest at the Pohuwato Regent's Office Sept. 21. Police will likely maintain heightened security over the coming days amid further protests planned at Pohuwato Police Station in Marisa Sept. 26-30. The action is over several demands, particularly the release of demonstrators detained at the Pohuwato Police Station for their alleged involvement in the Sept. 21 protest and the suspension of PT Merdeka Copper Gold operations in Pohuwato Regency. Organizers claim that 20,000 people will join the action, though actual attendance will probably be lower.

Officials will almost certainly monitor any gatherings that materialize and may move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Security forces may impose security cordons and traffic diversions near sensitive government buildings, such as the Pohuwato Police Station, as a precaution during the protests. Activists could engage in arson and vandalism. Authorities may implement enhanced measures, including temporary public gathering restrictions and/or vehicular checks, depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators are possible. Security forces may use water cannons and batons to forcibly disperse unruly crowds. Localized traffic disruptions are possible near protest sites, especially if activists occupy nearby streets.

Pohuwato is approximately 150 km (93.2 miles) east of Gorontalo Regency.

Context

On Sept. 21, around 2,500 protestors staged a protest march to the Pohuwato Regent's Office in Marisa to demand compensation over the activity of mining company PT Puncak Emas Tani Sejahtera, a subsidiary of PT Merdeka Copper Gold, in Pohuwato Regency. The protests turned unruly when government officials were unwilling to begin negotiations. The activists reportedly set fire to the Pohuwato Regent's Office as well as vandalised a few other buildings, including the People's Representative Council and the office of PT Puncak Emas Tani Sejahtera. At least 10 police officers suffered injuries while attempting to disperse demonstrators.

Advice

Avoid the protest site due to possible violence. If any violence breaks out nearby, leave the area and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernment building. Check for disruptions before beginning journeys and plan alternative routes if necessary. Allow additional travel time to reach nearby destinations. Heed all traffic and security advisories.
