Kenya: Electricity utility implementing power cuts in several counties, Sept. 14

Kenya Power implementing power cuts in ten counties including Nairobi, and Mombasa, through late Sept. 14. Possible disruptions.

Warning

Event

The Kenya Power utility is implementing electricity cuts in ten counties through late Sept. 14. The reason for the interruption is unclear, but is likely to allow for planned maintenance. The following areas are affected: Kiambu, Kilifi, Kirinyaga, Meru, Mombasa, Murang'a, Nairobi, Nyeri, Trans Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu. The utility announced power would be restored between 15:00-17:00.

Commercial and communications disruptions are possible until technicians fully restore electrical service in areas that may still be experiencing power outages. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times may occur during these periods due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services, such as hospitals, ATMs, and petrol stations. Outages could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Advice

Plan for disruptions to business and utility services in affected areas. Plan for possible road travel delays due to malfunctioning or nonfunctional traffic lights. Follow local travel and security advice.
