Kenya: Heightened security and road closures during major event in Nairobi, Sept. 4-6
Heightened security and road closures during Africa Climate Summit in central Nairobi, Kenya, Sept. 4-6.
Event
The Africa Climate Summit will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi from Sept. 4-6. Officials have deployed security personnel to safeguard the site and will close several roads located within a 2km (1.2 mile) radius 'Red Zone' around the event site. Thousands of people, including heads of state, will attend the conference.
Roads earmarked for closure include:
Harambee Avenue between Parliament roundabout to Taifa Junction.
Taifa Road from Harambee Avenue junction to City Hall Way junction.
City Hall Way junction from Holy Family Basilica roundabout to Taifa Road junction.
Parliament Road from Harambee Avenue roundabout to the City Hallway roundabout.
Officials have advised motorists to use alternative roads during the event, including the Eastern Bypass, Wangari Maathai Road, Outer Ring Road, and the Southern Bypass.
The event is likely to cause traffic disruptions in central Nairobi. Disruptions may also occur at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) as dignitaries arrive and later depart. Protests by climate activists may occur during the event. Any such gatherings are likely to be accompanied by a heightened security presence and be tightly contained.
Advice
Prepare for road travel delays near the event site through Sept. 6. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. Reconfirm flights and plan for some disruptions at NBO. Heed the instructions of officials.
