Kosovo: Tight security and heightened tensions likely in Mitrovica Region following Sept. 24 police shootout with gunmen in Banjska
Tight security, heightened tensions likely in Kosovo's Mitrovica Region following Sept. 24 police shootout with gunmen in Banjska.
Event
Tight security and heightened tensions will likely persist in Kosovo's Mitrovica District until at least the end of September following a shootout between police and ethnic Serb gunmen at the Banjska Monastery. The incident began at about 03:00 Sept. 24 when about 30 masked gunmen seized the monastery and engaged in an hours-long standoff with Kosovar law enforcement officers. At least three of the attackers and one police officer were killed in the subsequent exchanges of fire. The governments of Kosovo and Serbia have blamed each other for the violence.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security force presence in the district until it becomes clear that no further attacks or related unrest are imminent. Officials could impose localized movement restrictions, or conduct increased patrols.
Advice
Exercise increased situational awareness if operating in northern Kosovo through at least the end of September. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of any unrest or security disturbance. Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by local law enforcement personnel.
