Mayotte: Further protests over water shortages possible territorywide through at least late October /update 1

Further protests over water cuts possible across Mayotte through at least late October.

Informational

Event

Further protests over water shortages are possible across Mayotte through at least late October. Participants are denouncing the 48-hour water cuts that local officials have implemented since Sept. 4. Residents have demonstrated several times in Mamoudzou, near the water utility company SMAE and the préfecture buildings, since officials implemented the water cuts. A gathering on Sept. 27 drew at least 1,000 participants at the Place de la République. The exact water cut schedule is accessible here. Officials cited one of the worst droughts affecting the territory that relies heavily on rainwater as a reason for the water shortages.

Future gathering locations include the SMAE building, the Place de la République, the préfecture, and other government offices. Police forces will likely deploy to monitor any gatherings that materialize. Traffic disruptions may occur near demonstrations. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out. Poor water quality could impact businesses and organizations that rely on public water.

Advice

Avoid potential protests as a precaution. Stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations if operating in Mayotte. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes.
