Syria: Kurdish officials impose curfew in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate, Sept. 26
Kurdish officials impose indefinite curfew in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate, Syria, Sept. 26 following deadly clashes. Increased security likely.
Event
The Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) declared an open-ended curfew in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate early Sept. 26. The curfew, which mainly includes SDF-controlled eastern and northern parts of the governorate, is in response to clashes late Sept. 25 that resulted in the death of at least 25 people near Diban. Since late August, the US-backed Kurdish-led forces have been involved in clashes with rival armed forces, including militants from the Islamic State (IS) and the supporters of the Syrian government.
Further clashes are likely. Heightened security measures and additional movement restrictive measures may be implemented in the governorate in response to the conflict in the coming days.
Context
On Sept. 2, SDF authorities imposed a 48-hour curfew in Deir Ez-Zur Governorate. This measure was in response to clashes sparked by the arrest by the SDF of the leader of the Deir Ezzor Military Council, Ahmad al-Khabil. Since late August, dozens of people have reportedly been killed in fighting between the SDF and suspected IS militants and Syrian government supporters
