Trinidad and Tobago: Further protests due to water shortages possible in multiple areas through at least late September

Further protests against water shortages possible in Trinidad and Tobago through at least late September.

Warning

Event

Further protests over water shortages are possible in Trinidad and Tobago through at least late September. Shortages prompted widespread protests in southern Trinidad on Sept. 20. Protests reportedly occurred in Bristol Village, Mayaro, Union Village, Penal Rock Road, Pluck Road, San Francique, Woodland, and Penal. Participants burnt tires and blocked roads. Authorities have not yet provided a specific resolution date, increasing the likelihood of further unrest in areas affected by the shortages.

A heightened security presence, as well as localized transit and business disruptions, are likely near any further demonstrations that materialize. Although not likely, clashes between authorities and protesters cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.

Advice

Monitor local media for updates on the situation and related advisories from authorities. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Stock up on drinking water in advance. Confirm alternative water supplies for business operations. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the shortages. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes.
