Unionized fuel workers postpone strike in Tunisia scheduled for Sept 29-30. Further strike possible.

Informational

Event

Unionized workers of fuel distribution companies affiliated with the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) have postponed their nationwide strike scheduled for Sept. 29-30 to Oct 19-20 following discussions with the Ministry of Social Affairs. The earlier call for labor action comes amid a breakdown in negotiations over salary increases.

Context

An initial strike, planned for Sept. 14-15, was postponed as new talks began. Strikes and labor-related protests are common throughout Tunisia. Labor unions frequently use strikes, or the threat of a strike, to pressure government officials into concessions; however, most strikes are quickly averted after last-minute negotiations.
