Tunisia: Unionized workers from fuel distribution companies to strike nationwide, Sept. 29-30

Unionized workers from fuel distribution companies announce nationwide strike in Tunisia Sept. 29-30. Fuel shortages possible.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers of fuel distribution companies affiliated with the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) have announced plans to strike nationwide, Sept. 29-30. The labor action comes amid a breakdown in negotiations over salary increases. The National Oil Distribution Company (AGIL) has announced there would be sufficient fuel supply during the strike and asked consumers not to stock up on fuel ahead of the action.

The labor action could still result in nationwide fuel supply shortages if consumers stock fuel ahead of and during the strike. While there have been no calls for associated protests, strike-related demonstrations or pickets cannot be ruled out. Potential protest locations include headquarters of oil distribution companies, prominent government buildings, and public squares. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Context

An initial strike, planned for Sept. 14-15, was postponed as new talks began. Strikes and labor-related protests are common throughout Tunisia. Labor unions frequently use strikes, or the threat of a strike, to pressure government officials into concessions; however, most strikes are quickly averted after last-minute negotiations.

Advice

Ensure enough fuel for a return journey before driving long distances, particularly in rural areas. Reconfirm all business and travel arrangements. Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes.
