Magnitude-6.3 aftershock occurs north of Herat, Herat Province, Afghanistan, at around 08:06 Oct. 15; further aftershocks likely.

Critical

Event

A magnitude-6.3 aftershock occurred around 33 km (20 miles) north-northwest of Herat, Herat Province, at approximately 08:06 Oct. 15. Shaking was likely felt across Herat Province and parts of southern Turkmenistan and northeastern Iran. The temblor, which struck at a depth of 8 km (5 miles), follows a magnitude-6.3 earthquake and several strong aftershocks in the same region since Oct. 7, including a magnitude-6.3 aftershock Oct. 11. The latest earthquake will likely result in additional damage, especially to unstable structures, and possibly casualties.

Local authorities confirm that the casualty toll stands at around 1,384 people dead and 1,853 others injured as of Oct. 14. Approximately 21,282 structures sustained damage, impacting around 19,250 people across multiple districts in the region. Authorities will likely update these figures over the coming days amid the latest aftershock. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. The districts of Zinda Jan and Ghorian are worst affected. Reports indicate that the temblors have destroyed at least six villages and caused telecommunications disruptions in impacted areas.

The duration of recovery and restoration efforts is unclear, though this could last for weeks, especially in the event of further aftershocks. Additional damage to infrastructure, including roads, is probable in the worst-affected locations. The large number of casualties and displaced population will likely overwhelm local health services. The temblors may also cause power and water supply disruptions.

Advice

Reconsider nonessential travel to the impact areas until the situation stabilizes. Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving, particularly in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
