China: Authorities to deploy increased security and temporarily close roads in Beijing for Belt and Road Initiative Forum Oct. 17-18

Tight security, temporary road closures planned in Beijing, China, during Belt and Road Initiative Forum Oct. 17-18.

Informational

Event

Chinese authorities will tighten security and impose several temporary road closures in Beijing Oct. 17-18 as the nation hosts the 2023 Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum at the National Convention Center. Given that heads of state and other dignitaries from at least 130 countries will attend the event, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Taliban ministers from Afghanistan, security is certain to be heavy, especially around diplomatic missions, prominent hotels, and key government facilities.

Heavy security and additional screening checkpoints are likely at railway and bus stations in Beijing, as well as popular public venues including Tiananmen Square and the Great Hall of the People. Tighter security checks are likely at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), as well as the capital's smaller Nanyuan Airport (NAY). Minor processing and flight delays are posible, especially at PEK, as dignitaries arrive and leave.

Temporary road closures will be imposed along specific routes until 23:59 Oct. 18, including Tianchen East Road, Tianchen West Road, National Stadium North Road, and Datun Road. Both vehicles and pedestrians are prohibited from utilizing the affected roads. At least eight public bus services, including No. 311, 319, 379, 450, 466, 484, and 695, will be rerouted. The movement of drones, low-speed and small aircraft, as well as sky lanterns, are also prohibited until 23:59 Oct. 19.

Advice

Allow additional time for ground travel in Beijing through at least Oct. 19. Strictly heed all instructions from authorities. Confirm any scheduled meetings at government offices. Carry proper identification at all times and be prepared for possible bag searches at transport centers and other sensitive locations. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks; wait for authorities to dismantle them. Reconfirm flight schedules if booked to fly via PEK or NAY Oct. 17-18; allow extra time to clear airport security.
