Informational

Event

Women's and non-binary groups to strike and rally nationwide, Oct. 24. Multiple civil society associations will call for an end to gender-based violence, and for increased recognition of women-dominated professions. The strike is likely to have a widespread impact on private and public sector services, including education and healthcare provision. Demonstrations are most likely in front of government buildings and in central squares and public spaces.

Additional police will likely deploy to any major demonstrations. Large crowds and associated security measures could prompt localized disruptions, including possible road closures and movement restrictions. Demonstrations are expected to pass off peacefully.

Context

The Women’s Strike started as a protest in 1975 known as "The Women’s Day Off" because unions did not back the proposed strike action. Women's civil society groups have led similar collective action in 1985, 2005, 2010, 2016, and 2018.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Check all healthcare and other appointments. Check local media sources for up-to-date information.
