Workers to rally in Chandigarh and other parts of Haryana, India, Oct. 18. Tight security, traffic disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in Haryana State plan to stage 24-hour protests outside the residences of state ministers Oct. 18. The largest demonstrations are likely near the Chief Minister's residence in Chandigarh Sector 3 and the Health Minister's home in Ambala's Shastri Colony. Most other events will occur in sectors 5, 7, 6, and 16 in Chandigarh. The actions concern long-standing demands for better working conditions, including a minimum monthly wage and social security benefits. At least a few hundred workers are likely to join each gathering. Protesters may prolong demonstrations or hold additional rallies in the coming days until officials fulfill their demands.

Heightened security measures are likely around gathering sites. Localized transport disruptions are probable, especially if participants march on or block roadways. Clashes between the police and protesters may occur, particularly if activists attempt to breach security cordons around ministerial residences.

Advice

Avoid the protests as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Do not attempt to navigate roadblocks; wait for authorities to dismantle them. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately for a secure, nongovernment building. Allow additional time for journeys in affected areas. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for security checks. Heed all local security and traffic advisories.
