Informational

Event

Indonesia will host the 2023 Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Summit at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali Province, Oct. 10-11. Leaders and delegations from 51 member nations and various international organizations are scheduled to attend the summit. Around 500 foreign delegates and journalists will likely participate in the event.

Authorities will bolster security in Nusa Dua, particularly around the summit venue. Officials will deploy more than 14,500 security personnel in Nusa Dua during the summit as a precaution. Checkpoints and random security checks are likely, particularly on roads leading to the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center. Road closures and traffic delays are likely in the vicinity of the event venue, particularly during the arrivals and departures of delegates. Police will probably impose temporary roadblocks and redirect traffic to facilitate high-level motorcades.

Attendees are likely to arrive and depart via I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), also known as Denpasar International Airport. Increased security at DPS during the summit may lead to possible congestion and delays in clearing customs and security screenings.

Protests are possible in the lead-up to and during the summit. Security forces will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators may block and/or march along roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Police could conduct mass arrests if protesters refuse to disperse when ordered to do so.

Advice

Avoid any protests that may materialize. If operating in Nusa Dua consider avoiding event venues if not attending. Allow additional time if traveling in the affected area Oct. 10-11. Carry proper identification documents. Heed instructions from authorities. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a security disturbance.
