Warning

Event

The Indonesian Student Executive Board (BEM SI) will protest outside Jakarta's State Palace on Oct. 20. The purpose of the action is to denounce a recent Constitutional Court ruling against lowering the age requirement for presidential and vice presidential candidates. Organizers reportedly plan to gather at 14:00. Additional gatherings in Jakarta are possible. Potential gathering sites include other government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings will probably draw thousands of participants, especially near the State Palace.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such gatherings and could disperse overly unruly crowds. Officials could implement enhanced restrictions, including road blockades and/or vehicular checks, particularly near the State Palace. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators could march along and/or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Associated localized business disruptions are possible.

Advice

Avoid any demonstration that materializes due to possible violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
