Israel, Lebanon: Cross-border exchanges of fire along the Israeli-Lebanese border likely through at least mid-October /update 1
Cross-border exchanges of artillery, mortar, and rocket fire likely across areas of the Israeli-Lebanese border through mid-October.
Event
Cross-border rocket, mortar, and artillery fire exchanges are likely along the Israeli-Lebanese border through at least mid-October. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) retaliated against the Lebanese militant group Hizballah after the militant group launched dozens of rockets and mortars that targeted IDF military positions in the Sheba'a Farms area early Oct. 8. Reports indicate at least two additional Hizballah rockets targeted northern Israel the early afternoon of Oct. 8. IDF retaliatory fire is almost certain to continue targeting areas where projectiles have been fired from Lebanese territory. Additionally, authorities have reportedly advised residents of Metula, along the Lebanese border, to evacuate to locations further south.
Over the coming days, authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture along the Israeli-Lebanese border, particularly in the Northern District. The IDF will almost certainly conduct retaliatory strikes against militant bases and rocket launch sites in Lebanon. Additional precautionary measures, such as evacuations, are possible in affected areas.
Advice
Consider avoiding nonessential travel near the shared Lebanon-Israel border until the situation stabilizes. Monitor local media and abide by security forces' directives. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement.
